NSW Business Case and Evaluation Uplift Training
In late 2024, NSW Treasury released updates to business case guidelines, including new templates to deliver a business case. At the same time, our client had also identified a need for additional training in specific areas of delivering business cases, to support in making them more clear, concise and compelling.
Task / Action:
TargetedBrains was engaged to develop and deliver a workshop training package that covered:
- new business case guidelines – the guidelines have a stronger link to evaluation, requiring program logics from this stage. As such, the training covered the practical development of a program logic.
- how to write a successful business case
- components and mandatory requirements of a business case, including the case for change, options, financial and cost-benefit analysis, and procurement and management approaches.
Components of a business case

To support delivery of the training, TargetedBrains developed a workbook that included resources, templates and activities. Some activities were delivered as part of the workshop, while others were provided as extension activities to be completed at a later date.
Result: The training resulted in a tangible improvement in the understanding and confidence of writing a business case
There was strong interest in the training, with maximum attendance reached. Training was delivered on-site at our client’s offices, with physical and digital versions of the training pack provided to participants.
Participant surveys demonstrated a substantial increase in confidence and understanding following the workshop, with interest in additional training to further deepen their knowledge.
